I owe much of my whisky interest not to a person or a whisky club but to the place where I was born.
You see, the Åland Islands is a tax-free zone (atleast for a while more) and the ferries that bomb the islands with tourists also, more importantly, bring a steady supply of different bottlings ashore. After moving to Sweden and the ferries selection long since sampled I was introduced to a local active whisky club which fueled my interest even more. For some reason I also got into contact with, I suppose we could call them, the hardcore gang of that club and I joined their regular tastings. By now my interest was burning like a forest on fire.

I discovered the maniacs while googling around for some SMWS information and soon got hooked by their fun and inspired writings. Serge's unabrigded matrix also became a favourite when scouring for interesting bottles out there. After meeting up with maniacs Johannes, Alexander and Michel in Amsterdam in June 2005 I learned these guys were into this on a level surpassing myself, so why not apply for membership? Said and done, and now I'm here!

My tastes when it comes to whisky are broad indeed.
Although I tend to rate whiskies with abundant smoke influence the highest I fancy a grassy, citrusy Rosebank as much as a hellishly peaty Ardbeg or a balanced fruity, smoky Brora or Ben Nevis. I am convinced that I will never stop to be fascinated by the experiences this heavenly water of life can bring. And the things surrounding it! The people, the fairs, the distilleries (not that I have visited any of rank). Not yet at least.

I pursue a long-term goal to sample atleast five bottlings of every Scottish distillery that has produced single malt in "modern" times. A goal inspired by Johannes, a very inspiring mission indeed. Sadly I must confess that I lag terribly behind, but someday I'll get there! Meanwhile I enjoy myself greatly hunting down weird bottlings.

When I'm not on whisky fairs (not too often after all) I live with Charlotte and our son Samuel (at the time of writing two months old). We're currently building a house in the city of Växjö in Sweden where we'll move in a few months. I work as a software engineer for a IT-consultancy firm and spend most my time there designing and building corporate .NET web applications, which is funnier that it sounds ;).

A no less than heavenly expression from this masterly distillery.
The complexity and balance is no less than astonishing.

Ardbeg 25yo 1975/2000 (50%, DL OMC, 702b.)
Not far from the Provenance in style, although perhaps slightly less complexity present.

Loch Lomond, Inchmurrin 34yo (45.3%, V&S Part Nan Angelen)
Part of the series that Folke Andersson, the Swedish whisky guru, has hunted down for the swedish market.
Quite sherried with clear evidence of eucalyptus and very elegant traces of smoke makes this dram a wonderful experience.

Brora 31yo 1972/2003 (49.3%, DL Platinum)
A highly elegant expression from this fabulous distillery.
Not as peaty as some would prefer their Brora, to me this is as nearly good as it gets.

Ardbeg 26yo 1979 (59%, G&M Spirit of Scotland)
A big punch of a dram. Made me almost fall off my chair when sampled, very drinkable without water even at this strength.

Ardbeg 24yo 1977 (46%, OB)
My favourite of their range of "standard" bottlings, if the Provenance can be excepted.
Quite the peaty one and with a disappointing nose. The taste, and aftertaste, however, makes it qualify to my top ten.

Ardbeg 24yo 1980/2004 'Kildalton' (57.6%, OB)
The concentration of exotic fruit found in this bottling is nothing less than amazing.

Bruichladdich 37yo 'Legacy' (41.8%, OB)
This is bourbon-matured unpeated liquid complexity at it's very best.

Port Ellen 23yo 1979 (56.3%, Signatory, refill sherry)
Another expression where peat and sweetness marry in complete harmony.

Macallan 50yo 1940 (40%, G&M Speymalt)
Difficult to fathom that a whisky has survived this long on a cask without deteriorating even the slightest.
A sherried, fruity wonderful Macallan this is.
