I'm afraid Glen Elgin draw a short straw when I had to wrap
up a few distillery profiles on more 'obscure' distilleries quickly.
Not only would many consider this distillery indeed obscure, my
personal experiences with nine expressions so far have left me
less than convinced - only 1 out of the 9 scored over 80 points.
That being said, with four in the upper 70's it's not all bad news.
As far as the facts are concerned, Glen Elgin was built between
1898 and 1900 by a partnership of William Simpson & James Carle.
That seems like a long time, but it was after the 'Pattison Crash'.
Proper production at Glen Elgin started officially on May 1, 1900.
I haven't had time to research it properly yet, but if my informetion is correct the current distillery configuration at Glen Elgin is quite unusual. They have four wash stills and three spirit stills (all relaively small in size as well) where 'pairs' seem to be more customary.
May 1, 1900 was not one of the most blessed of days, apparently...
The distillery was sold to
Glen Elgin-Glenlivet Distillery Co Ltd. in 1901, opened in 1902 but failed again just five months later. In 1907 Glen Elgin was acquired by John J. Balanche, a whisky merchant from Glasgow - all this assuming my information is correct, that
is...
From there on things moved more smoothly.
Apart from a few changes in ownership little 'constructive' happened until 1964 when Glen Elgin was rebuilt and the number of stills was extended from two to six. UDV's (i.e. Diageo's) 'sister' distillery Glendullan in the Dufftown region of Speyside underwent a similar massive refurbishment less than a decade later. However, there's a 'twist'...
All I can add is that in 2001 an official 'Fauna & Flora' bottling was released by Diageo.
Check out my Track Record for a complete overview of all 'siplings' I've tried until 2006.
