It's a strange thing that Glendullan is relatively unknown as a
single malt; measured in production capacity (3,700,000 litres of
alcohol per year) it's actually Diageo's second-largest distillery,
right after Dufftown
and before Caol Ila that has the #1 spot.
So, theoretically, that would make Glendullan a very interesting
distillery for a profile. Yes, except.... As you can read elsewhere
in this archive
I'm pressed for time at the moment and I'm forced
to focus on a few other, more 'high profile' distilleries during the
last few months of 2006. I'm afraid Glendullan is so obscure that
its full profile will have to wait for the new Malt Madness website.
And that's all the 'raw data' that jumps to mind at the moment.
Looking at my personal experience
with the seven expressions I've tried so far (i.e. when I write this in August 2006) I'd have to say that maybe Glendullan deserves some more credit than it gets these days. Out of seven expressions, five managed to reach the eighties. My
personal favourits were both expressions bottled by Cadenhead's but most 'older' OB's (meaning either those with an age statement over 20yo or bottled before 1990) did very well too.
So, that's it for Glendullan. Next step: Glen Elgin I guess...
Let's see, what to tell here?
Glendullan is
located in what's probably the busiest 'whisky town' in the Speyside area: Dufftown. It was built there (relatively late) in 1897-1898 by William Williams & Sons Ltd, blenders from Aberdeen who later (in 1919) changed their name to
Macdonald, Greenlees & Williams (Distillers) Ltd. They were taken over by the DCL in 1926 - which later evolved into today's giant Diageo.
The Glendullan distillery was completely rebuilt in 1972 - or rather a new distillery was built
with a larger number of stills - six this time. Apparently the old distillery buildings remained
in use as a maintenance workshop until 1985.
